Thehospitalbook is a basic hospital and clinic directory in Nigeria. It started with nothing more than an idea and an Excel spreadsheet.

  1. No backlinks.
  2. No domain authority.
  3. No brand awareness.
  4. And definitely… no budget for paid marketing.

It was a simple test:

Could we build meaningful SEO traffic in healthtech with structured content and strong on-page SEO?

Fast forward 12 months, and Thehospitalbook is a go-to resource for hospital directories across Nigeria, ranking in the top 5 for several high-intent queries.

All this without writing traditional blog content or running a single ad.

A Lean Start with Big SEO Ambitions

When we launched Thehospitalbook, the client was exploring the viability of the healthtech industry in Nigeria.

Rather than committing to a massive build, they opted for a lean MVP approach:

  1. A domain with a DA of 7
  2. Zero backlinks
  3. A flat Excel file listing hospitals, locations, and services

The plan?

Build a hospital directory site to validate whether underserved healthcare queries had real search volume and intent.

But this wasn’t an easy space.

We were entering a competitive, high-trust industry with well-established players and medical organizations already ranking.

Instead of retreating, we saw this as a unique opportunity to outmaneuver them by targeting long-tail, local-intent keywords others were ignoring.

Turning a Spreadsheet into 36,000+ Indexed Pages

Our first move was transforming the Excel data into clean, SEO-optimized directory pages.

Each page was programmatically generated, hyper-focused on a hospital name, local government, private and public categories, hospital directories like dermatology, optometry, gynecology, etc, resulting in thousands of high-quality URLs that matched what users were actually searching for.

We didn’t just upload the data.

We restructured it.

Key on-page elements included:

  1. Custom title tags and meta descriptions with keyword-relevant modifiers
  2. Local intent embedded into each page (e.g., “Cardiologist in Yaba” or “Maternity Hospital in Abuja”)
  3. Clean, mobile-friendly layouts that prioritized speed and clarity

We also implemented strong internal linking, allowing users and Google to easily crawl between city pages, specialty categories, and hospital listings.

The result was a tightly interlinked content structure communicating page relationships and boosting crawl efficiency.

High-Intent SEO Wins Without Traditional Blogging

Most hospital-related SEO strategies focus on generic blog content: health tips, symptoms, and treatments.

We took a different route.

Instead of chasing blog traffic, we targeted people actively searching for specific hospitals or health services in specific locations.

That meant skipping high-volume vanity keywords and focusing on:

  1. Branded searches for local hospitals
  2. “Near me” queries with medical intent
  3. Underserved long-tail treatment searches

For example (To list a few):
